Building Department Announcements

Just a reminder, if it isn't water, don't dump it in the storm drain!  The City of Highwood wants to remind you that our storm water sewers are not treated and run to our lakes, streams and rivers.  Everyone needs to contribute to clean water in our environment, so please don't dump waste in the storm sewers.  Instead, SWALCO offers you the option of recyling wastes such as motor oil, paint and other harmful liquids.  Also, water quality needs to be maintained when doing building or major landscaping projects.  If you need further information, please contact the City or the Lake County Storm Water Management Commission (SMC) for more information.  Thank you.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Now Required

Illinois Law - Public Act 094-0741 - requires carbon monoxide detectors in every dwelling unit in the State. This law defines dwelling unit as any "room or suite of rooms used for human habitation and includes single family residence as well as each living unit of a multiple family residence and each living unit in a mixed use builiding."

What this means is that you must have a working carbon monoxide detector wherever you live. The law further requires that the detector must be within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes. This is the same requirement as the one for smoke detectors.

It is the responsibility of the owner to supply and install all required alarms. It is the tenants' responsibility to test and maintain the alarm, including replacing any needed batteries.

The act became effective January 1, 2007. Please install all necessary detectors immediately.

Feel free to contact Highwood Fire Chief Tom Lovejoy at 432-7622 for further information and with any questions.
