Carbon Monoxide Detectors Now Required Illinois Law - Public Act 094-0741 - requires carbon monoxide detectors in every dwelling unit in the State. This law defines dwelling unit as any "room or suite of rooms used for human habitation and includes single family residence as well as each living unit of a multiple family residence and each living unit in a mixed use builiding."
What this means is that you must have a working carbon monoxide detector wherever you live. The law further requires that the detector must be within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes. This is the same requirement as the one for smoke detectors.
It is the responsibility of the owner to supply and install all required alarms. It is the tenants' responsibility to test and maintain the alarm, including replacing any needed batteries.
The act became effective January 1, 2007. Please install all necessary detectors immediately.
