Department Overview

The Parks and Recreation Department offers the community a variety of programs and recreational opportunities all throughout the year.  During the spring and summer, the ball fields located on Western Avenue are busy with baseball and softball programs. New playground equipment installed in 2004 brings families together as they watch their children play.  Young children may also enjoy the playground equipment at Everts Park, located just west of the Highwood Library on Highwood Avenue. In 2004, a new family park opened to the public on the south end of town near the Burtis Avenue and Summit Avenue intersection.  Equipped with a children’s play system, this new addition to our community will be enjoyed by many children and families for years to come.

A number of events, including summer concerts and farmers’ markets are held at this park each summer.

When the weather gets cold, the community’s Recreation Center, located on Green Bay Road, offers a variety of programs for everyone. The Center’s basketball programs, for kids of all ages, are run by Finish Strong Athletics, Highwood Small Fry and Play Hard Hoops. Please visit their websites for registration information. Karate classes are available to both adults and children as well; contact Joe at 847-710-5570. This fall, we will have Zumba and Pilates classes at the Center every weekend. For Zumba information please call Mercedes at 847-571-0466 and Dave at 847-624-5772 for Pilates times.

The Recreation Center is also available to rent for private parties to both residents and non-residents for an hourly fee. Feel free to come on in for more details or give us a call as it tends to book up quickly!
