City Council Committees
Public Safety Committee
The City's Public Safety Committee is responsible for identifying and examining Highwood's public safety issues, including but not limited to emergency preparedness, fire / emergency medical services (EMS), and police services. These issues also include traffic control and parking.
Public Outreach Committee
The City Public Outreach Committee's responsibility is to educate the public on the mission and goals of the City Council. In addition, the committee serves as the marketing and communications arm of the city in areas such as economic development, transportation, health, safety and welfare.

Finance Committee
A recommending body focusing on supporting the City Council’s decision making when it relates to the city’s finances. Areas of focus include but are not limited to: budgeting, borrowing, grants, investing, reporting, strategy, and cooperating with other City Council committees.

Long Term Planning Committee
The Long Term Planning Committee advises the City Council on future growth and development issues that affect the city. The committee reviews and makes recommendations to the council on comprehensive plan items, redevelopment plans, changes in development regulations, economic development master plans, capital improvement plans, public works, zoning, planning, and appearance review.

Legislative Committee
The responsibility of the city's Legislative Committee is to, at the direction of the City Council, research and draft ordinances not assigned to another standing committee. In addition, this committee will review and respond to legislative initiatives brought forward by the city manager. The committee will also monitor legislation at the county, state, and federal level reporting for all issues of relevance to the full City Council.
Parks and Recreation Committee
The Parks and Recreation Committee is responsible for the study of issues related to park facilities, features, developments, and modifications. The committee prepares recommendations and proposals for the City Council based on in-depth review and study of park-related issues and concerns.

Mayor's Committee for Special Events
The Mayor's Committee for Special Events is responsible for all special events and related programs of the city including parades, fests, tastes, and community fairs. The committee is also responsible for those matters which affect the cultural growth of the city.
