Free Trees For Highwood, Fall Program - Updates and Link

City of Highwood and Chicago Region Trees Initative Poster

Hello Highwood Residents,

The City of Highwood and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) based out of The Morton Arboretum are excited to partner with you for a voluntary, free tree planting project at your site this fall!

We will be delivering trees in the fall.  We will deliver your tree, mulch, and tree care resources (including how to properly plant your tree) while respecting social distancing restrictions, as the health of our communities remains our priority. If you would like assistance in planting your tree please let us know. We are more than happy to help dig the hole or move the tree into place, respecting social distance requirements as necessary.

If you are interested in participating please follow this link:  Sign Up for a Tree!.

More info
  1. Tree transport: Yes, I will have the CRTI truck and trailer available for transporting trees and equipment. I can also look to rent a U-Haul truck for the day that one of my team members will drive for more efficient tree transport.
  2. Crew to plant trees: Yes, we will have members of the CRTI team available to plant.

For the sites where a CRTI team member is assisting the resident everyone will have specific tasks: scrape away sod, dig hole, check hole size based on tree root ball, place tree, replace soil, secure tree, spread mulch. We will review these steps with the residents.

Additional resources: each resident will get the Tree Owner’s Manual and the watering bucket with the planting and mulching graphic at the time of planting.

We work at a steady pace in order to prioritize proper tree planting in a positive, team environment.

Tree size: 1 - 1.5’ caliper trees, 5 - 6’ tall

We plant containerized trees - either in pots or grow bags - in holes ~2-3’ wide and deep depending on the tree.

Planting materials: provided

We will have a truck and trailer on site with equipment available.

Calling JULIE: on private land the residents, as the landowners, need to call JULIE. Without confirmation of JULIE checking utilities we cannot plant at their sites.
