Highwood Leads the Way in Composting: Free Pails Available at City Hall!

News Flashes Posted on January 12, 2026

Highwood is proud to continue leading the way in sustainability as one of the first cities in Illinois to offer a residential composting program. This service makes it easy for residents to recycle food scraps and yard waste together in a dedicated compost cart, helping reduce landfill waste and create nutrient-rich soil.

How It Works:

1. Fill: Place kitchen scraps (fruit peels, coffee grounds, eggshells) and yard waste (leaves, grass clippings) in your organics cart. For a detailed composting guide, click here.

2. Set Out:  Put your organics cart at the curb on Wednesdays, along with your waste and recycling carts. LRS will handle the rest.

Be part of our ongoing green initiative! Stop by City Hall today to pick up your FREE compost pail and join your neighbors in making Highwood cleaner and greener. Together, we can keep our community thriving! 🌱
