Did you know composting can reduce household waste by up to 30%? Highwood is proud to be one of the first cities in Illinois to offer a curbside composting program—at no cost to residents! Through an agreement with Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), organic waste is collected every Wednesday along with your regular trash and recycling.
By composting, you’re not only helping the environment but also supporting local green initiatives. The Organics Program makes it easy to recycle food scraps and yard waste together in a dedicated organics cart.
Why Compost?
- Reduce Waste: Keep food scraps and yard waste out of landfills.
- Support Soil Health: Help create nutrient-rich compost for local gardens.
- Convenient Disposal: Enjoy easy curbside collection—no extra trips!
How It Works:
1. Fill: Place kitchen scraps (fruit peels, coffee grounds, eggshells) and yard waste (leaves, grass clippings) in your organics cart. For a detailed composting guide, click here.
2. Set Out: Put your organics cart at the curb on Wednesdays, along with your waste and recycling carts. LRS will handle the rest.
