Winter Theft Prevention: Simple Ways to Stay Secure

News Flashes Posted on January 27, 2026

During the winter months, many households rely on deliveries for everything from everyday essentials to online orders that make cold‑weather errands a little easier. While these frequent drop‑offs are convenient, they can also create opportunities for package theft if items are left unattended for too long. As winter remains in full swing, now is a great time to take a few simple steps that help protect both your deliveries and your peace of mind:

💡 Keep exterior lights on to help deter unwanted activity.
📬 Turn on delivery alerts so you know when packages arrive.
🎥 Use a doorbell or outdoor camera (like Ring) for visibility and deterrence.
🤝 Ask a trusted neighbor to pick up packages if you’re away.
🔒 Request delivery to a less visible spot or use secure pickup options.
🚗 Keep cars locked, remove keys, and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight.
🚨 Do not confront suspicious individuals and call 911 to report any concerns.

Even small actions can make a meaningful difference in reducing theft and keeping our community safe. Thank you for helping look out for one another this winter, and please continue to report any suspicious behavior to the Highwood Police Department by calling 911.
