Oak Terrace Elementary School has been a landmark in Highwood since 1916. It began as small building with six classrooms and a main auditorium. When the school opened, there were 187 students and six teachers. Past principals include John Ourth, Ray Rodriguez and Art Abrego.
The current Oak Terrace building was constructed in 2000. The two-story building exhibits a 'prairie-style' look influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. The 85,000 square foot brick building includes 28 classrooms, a 6,000 square foot gym, a 3,400 square foot multi - purpose room, a cafeteria, two art rooms and a music room. Oak Terrace today has about 80 staff members who serve approximately 500 students. Jim Kallieris is the Principal, Janet Van Arsdale is the Associate Principal, and Shannon Loughlin is the Special Education Coordinator.
Oak Terrace is proud of its strong parent involvement and the way the community works together to support a variety of programs. The Oak Terrace community believes that when a village becomes involved in the lives of children great success stories emerge!*
