The City of Highwood and the City of Highland Park have entered into an intergovernmental agreement for fire and emergency medical services. Both communities approved the agreement which will allow the City of Highland Park to provide shared fire and emergency medical services to Highwood and in November 2015. The next and final step will be for the Highwood residents to pass the referendum on March 15, 2016 to allow for the closure of the existing station. Per state statute, this is required in order for the closure to occur. If the referendum were to pass, the contract for Highland Park to provide fire and emergency medical services in Highwood would begin on July 1, 2016.
As required by the State of Illinois, the March 15, 2016 referendum language will be as follows;
“Shall the City of Highwood Fire Department serving the citizens with the City of Highwood cease to provide emergency services and be dissolved and discontinued?”
Public input is welcome and a copy of all the agreements can be found on the Agendas and Minutes page of the City’s website. Also, a copy of frequently asked questions can be found by clicking the link below.
