On Monday, August 29th, the City of Highwood will be begin a renovation and re-painting project of the one million gallon elevated municipal water tower located on Sheridan Road. Dixon Engineering and Baxter and Woodman Engineers have been retained by the City to oversee the restoration project.
The current tower was constructed in 1999-2000 as part of a major restoration project of the City’s Water Treatment Facility and the paint on the elevated tower is now 16 years old. It is recommended that elevated water towers be re-painted every 12 to 15 years to avoid major deterioration of the structure. The water tower is showing signs of rust on the exterior and interior of the tank. Therefore, the City decided to approve and move forward with this project.
It is estimated that the project will take approximately 65 days to complete. During this time the water tower will be taken out of service and water will be supplied to customers through an interconnection from the City of Highland Park. The Highwood Water Department along with the Highland Park Fire Department conducted a series of pressure and flow tests to determine if adequate water supply could be provided from the City of Highland Park’s water source. All tests indicated that the water system will function as it normally would just as if Highwood were supplying the water.
