Free Tax Assistance for Low-Income Taxpayers
Starts February First in Moraine Township
From February 1 through April 8, 2017, Moraine Township will offer free assistance to low-and-moderate-income taxpayers filing their 2016 income tax returns through the IRS VITA Program (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance).
Volunteers are trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to prepare basic returns for taxpayers earning less than $55,000 in 2016. Appointments will take place in the Moraine Township Office, 777 Central Avenue, Highland Park, and are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Monday to Thursday and Saturdays 9 AM to 12 PM. Walk-in hours are Saturday 9 AM to 12 PM.
“We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers offering their time and skill to assist taxpayers in this effort,” noted VITA Site Co-Coordinator Donna Novickas.
Commented Moraine Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi, “We live in an extraordinary community where people give so much of themselves to help neighbors who may be struggling. We see this daily with the almost 40 individuals who help weekly in our food pantry, other volunteers who spend 40 hours a year training to help residents enroll for subsidized health insurance, and a corps of tireless volunteers who work on our citizen advisory committees and our holiday gift drive.”
