Did you know that composting can reduce your household waste by up to 30%? By composting, you're not only helping the environment but also supporting local green initiatives. Highwood, one of the first cities in Illinois to offer a compost program, provides residents with a free service through its Organics Program. This program allows residents to recycle food scraps and yard waste together in a dedicated organics cart.
Why Compost?
- Reduce Waste: Keep food scraps and yard waste out of landfills.
- Support Soil Health: Contribute to the creation of nutrient-rich compost for local gardens.
- Convenient Disposal: Save time and effort with easy curbside collection.
How It Works:
1. Fill: Deposit kitchen scraps such as fruit peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells, along with yard waste like leaves and grass clippings, in your organics cart (For a detailed composting guide, click here).
2. Set Out: Place your bin organics cart at the curb on Wednesdays, along with your waste and recycling carts, and LRS will take care of the rest.
Highwood residents are encouraged to take advantage of this free curbside composting program and make a positive impact on our planet today! For more information about Highwood’s Organics Program, click here.
